Juergen Teller

Juergen Teller was born in 1964 in Erlangen, Germany
He lives and works in London

Juergen Teller is one of the most famous photographers in the fashion and the art scenes. For the past ten years, Teller has been pushing the boundaries of contemporary photography in art and fashion - inventing his own universe. Thus, he is offering a very creative and an immersion in fashion contemporary world but with his specific point of view. Ambiguous, dark, trash or luminous, his point-and-shoot photographic style has nourished and influenced the anti-fashion statement of that time as a response to the 80’s glamour mania and glossiness. Tellers’ photographs seize the beautiful imperfections of people, whether they are models or not, in their reaction to the camera. Working for different world-wide magazines like ID, W, The Face, Purple, the German photographer based in London is very closed to several well-known fashion designers like Marc Jacobs.

For the Ukrainian Pavilion, Juergen Teller shows a group of new photos made in Ukraine during two visits over a few months. Playing with his own perception and understanding of Ukrainian living, Teller has caught in Kyiv, the fever and craziness of the fast evolution of a country, marked by obsession with capitalism - money as the new religion. In his photographs, a limited edition Louis Vuitton bag sits next to nylon shirts. Kyiv’s streets have become a theater or a surreal catwalk for high end luxury exposure and extravaganza.

His recent solo exhibitions include Awailable, Inverleith House, Edinburgh, 2007, Do you know what I mean, Cartier Foundation, Paris, 2006, Nürnberg, Lehmann Maupin, New York, 2006, Louis XV, Contemporary Fine Art, Berlin, 2005, Ich bin Vierzig, Kunsthalle Wien, 2004, The Master Modern Art, London, 2004, Temple Bar Visual Arts, Dublin, 2004, Miss World Kuntsthalle Mannheim, 2003/2004, Daddy You’re So Cute Lehmann Maupin, New York, 2003.
